Crochet Cluster Stitch Tutorial

Hello lovely crochet readers ...

With so many newbies to crochet asking me to help them with certain stitches I thought I would make some posts purely for crochet stitches so you can access them whenever you are struggling with a certain stitch.  I know not everyone can or wants to access YouTube so at least you can find my helpful tutorials here!

So this week I am starting with the cluster stitch ......  its a really easy stitch to learn as it uses the double crochet stitch technique .... so if you can do the treble crochet stitch you are already half way there!

It may look complicated but it really isn't and with its dense appearance its perfect for blankets and scarves and depending on what hook size and wool thickness you choose it can be a very warm and cosy stitch for your winter projects .....

 I'm sure your eager to get going .......

Crochet Terms UK
st = stitch
ch = chain stitch
ch sp = chain space
yo = yarn over
dc = double crochet
sk = skip
tr = treble crochet
cl = cluster stitch

In this tutorial I am making a swatch for you to see and will be using a 4.5mm hook and Drops Lima DK yarn .......

..... and working in multiples of 2 ..... so whatever project you decide to make you need to make your foundation chain long enough and in multiples of 2.  The pattern will be worked over 2 rows ..... easy!  So why not grab a hook and yarn and practise with me ....

Lets begin .....

ch 20 (purely for swatch practise)

Row 1: Into 2nd ch from hook insert hook and make a dc, then into next ch make another dc, ch1, sk1, dc, *(ch1, sk1, dc)* repeat * to* till you come to the LAST 3 st. sk1, dc, dc.

Row 2: Ch4 turn,

into first ch sp (scissors are pointing to first ch sp) we are going to make our first cluster stitch

...... yo insert hook and make the first half of the tr st, (yo, insert hook, yo pull through, yo pull through 2, leaving 2 loops on hook)

then into same st, repeat again, until there are 5 loops on the hook

 ......... then yo pull through all 5 loops,

your first Cluster Stitch ..... easy right!

ch1, then into next ch sp make next cl st, continue with ch1, cl st until the last dc st from previous row  ......

and tr into this st.

Row 3: ch1, turn, dc into same st,

dc into next ch sp,

then ch1, dc into space between cl st (see where scissors are pointing)

continue to end and finish with ch1, sk1, then dc into ch sp created by the previous row (see where hook is inserted).......

then dc into 3rd ch on the end (see where scissors are pointing)

These 2 rows form the pattern ..... so continue until you have reached the desired length for your project.

I am sure you agree that once you have worked your first cluster it's plain sailing from thereon ..... and you will love the texture created.  You can also make your cluster stitch slightly smaller by working until 4 loops are on the hook instead of 5 .... this makes a slightly thinner cluster stitch but is equally as nice.

Hope you enjoyed this tutorial ... I have added the YouTube Video below if you need to take a look and refer to ....

but until next time ....... take care and happy crochet!
